Canyonlands National Park, Moab, Utah, United States
In south-eastern Utah, USA, Canyonlands National Park reveals a vast, rugged landscape shaped over millions of years by the Colorado and Green rivers. Established in 1964, the park protects a maze of canyons, mesas and buttes carved into layers of ancient rock. Divided into districts such as Island in the Sky and The Needles, it offers sweeping views that shift with the light from dawn to dusk.
Life here is surprisingly resilient. Sparse desert plants—Russian olive, Utah juniper and Fremont's cottonwood—cling to the dry terrain, while wildlife such as desert bighorn sheep, coyotes and bald eagles move through the open expanse.
With its remote setting and exceptionally low light pollution, the park is also recognised as an International Dark Sky Park. After sunset, its clear skies reveal dense star fields and the Milky Way, offering a striking contrast to the stark, sunlit terrain.
